Problem with ethernet and wifi

I have a Gateway netbook, very old, with an Atheros wireless chip and a Nvidia ethernet card. If I have internet from a wifi hotspot and connect the ethernet port to my router, it loses the internet conection while keeping the wifi link to the hotspot. I want to use the remote desktop over ethernet to surf on the netbook connected to internet via wifi.

How can I solve this problem?

It seems to be an issue with the wifi Default Gateway connection getting superseded by the empty ethernet's.

What OS is on the Gateway?

connect to the Hotspot first.
Enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the Gateway.
Disable the DHCP on the router first
Then connect the Gateway to the router's LAN port.
