My computer running XP Home is having the symptoms of the sasser worm
and I downloaded the fix from Symantec. As it scans my files it keeps
encountering problems with certain files and then stops running.

Many of the files were my own and I just deleted them and restarted the
removal tool. Now it's getting into Windows system files and I'm
hesitant about deleting them, such as: system32\ersvc.dll

Any ideas why the removal program keeps hanging up and what to do about it?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Download AVG free edition from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 , update it to
the latest library and let it perform a full scan.

One thing to remember is that any virus / worm etc that you have on your
system will also be in your system restore points. So once you have
performed a full scan with AVG you should disable system restore (since this
will delete all of the restore points) and then re-enable it.
