Problem with getting gbps one way

Hi,

I am having an issue getting full speed with my server to my htpc. When I copy a file from the server to the htpc it transfers at roughly 60-80mbps. When I copy a file from the htpc to the server it transfers at 8-12mbps. Files are typically 5-8gb iso files.

I have full cat5e cables, gigabit nics in both machines, and a netgear wndr4300.

Since everything related to the hardware is gig compatible I'm assuming this is a software issue. Any advice is appreciated.

It's more likely to be an issue or limitation with the disk IO subsystems than the network.

I suggest downloading a copy of iperf and use it to test the network performance between the two computers - most should be able to achieve several hundred megabits per second on a gigabit connection.

381 Mbits/sec on a gig link isn't blazing but it isn't slow enough to really call it broken.

Can you try -d (dual test - tests send and receive simultaneously) and -r (trade-off - tests one way then the other) and post those results?

So after doing the iperf I did an IO test on the hard drives.

Results are as follows using Parkdale tester.
HTPC - 173mbps write, 199mbps read
Server - 6.4mbps write, 77.6mbps read

The server has a WD20EARS in it. Looking at benchmarks on it http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_caviar_green_2tb_review_wd20ears here the read is kind of in line. Write is bad. Hard drive failing or is something else causing this?

Yep, something is wrong there. Are you running any drive encryption software, or some kind of mirroring/backup software, or anything like that? You might give it a try with your anti-virus software shut-down...

Nope it has a fresh install of windows on it. The only thing it has on it is my iso files for my DVDs since the wife hates looking at them and pictures. It doesn't have an antivirus on it and I do my back ups with an external drive by hand. Bout the only thing I know to do from here is pull the drive and put it in another computer and retest it. Any other advice?

Trying it in another computer is a good idea.

Also, grab one of the tools that can extract the SMART info from the drive and see if it is reporting an error.

Maybe write caching is turned off?

I don't really know, but I expect so; I would replace it.
