Problem with gtx 1060 + hdmi to vga converter

Hello! I recently purchased an MSI Armor OC GTX 1060 knowing that I wouldnt be able to use it with my VGA monitor, but It was a good deal so I just bought it until i can buy a new monitor.

Somehow I run into an hdmi to vga converter cable, and decided to try it. The adapter works well on my old R7 250 card, I can use it's hdmi port with my VGA monitor. But when I tried the same exact thing with the GTX 1060, it didnt work.

My rig is

AMD FX 8350
ASUS M5A97 R2 (No video on board)

And I have a thermaltake TR2 700 W 80+ bronze PSU

So the question is... Am I doing something wrong?

It's the first time I install a graphic's card, but i have experience with other electronics so im pretty sure i connected everything correctly. Used the 6+2 pin, the card fans spin when I start the PC but after a while they stop. I get no signal on the monitor so can't see anything, but the card get's a little bit warm. Also i uninstalled all my old AMD Graphic card drivers using some Guru driver remover I found on this site.

I was thinking maybe the adapter was faulty, but it works with my old R7 card. So.. Any ideas?

HDMI has no analog (VGA) signal. Your adapter would have to be an active converter for it to work. That card appears to have no analog output at all.

Yes I know. But the dongle im using is an active converter, I used it on my other card, and on a Raspberry Pi also

Sorry but I'm not really sure what converter it is, i got it from a friend, no idea what brand or anything. Im pretty sure it's active since it's been used on a raspberry pi, also it has analog sound output

It's an active converter if it requires a power source to operate. The converter has to power a D/A IC.

I know what active means, I'm about to graduate at electronics engineering. I'm quite sure the converter is active, powered by the hdmi port. If it wasn't active, it wouldn't have worked with my other card, neither with the raspberry Pi

Bleh.. I sorted it out on my own. It was missing the driver. Windows installed it automatically and after that it worked.

Hello, i'm insterested by your solution, i have the same issue with a GTX 1060 and an VGA screen.
What kind of driver update have you made ? A specific driver for the GTX or a specific driver for the HDMI adapter? Does windows 10 search the driver when you plug the adapter ?

Hello! I hope i can help you. Windows doesn't know you're using an adapter, the driver I downloaded was specific for the 1060. The thing is that I didn't completely erase my AMD drivers, and didnt have any NVIDIA drivers installed either, so i just kept getting a black screen, So, i connected my amd card back, and then realised that windows started to download nvidia drivers, so used a tool to fully uninstall my AMD drivers and installed the nvidia drivers that windows recommended; after that, plugged the 1060 back and voilá, it worked.

Thanks for your answer. I my case i have my nvidia drivers up to date so i'm good at this level. For what i've read here and somewhere else, the GTX 1060 HDMI output provide neither analog stream nor power for the active conversion. So my basic adapter don"t work here. I should buy an active adapter (that has an usb plug for power supply). Then it should work. hey friend, I have the gtx 1080 with a dvi-d port in the back trying to plug in a vga monitor using an active dvi-d to vga adapter. my monitor is identified with the nvidia graphics card, but the screen is completely blank. just the power light shows on. can you link that driver you used. might have one for the 1080 and solve my issue.
