Problem with HP Laptop?

If this isn't in the right place I apologize but not entirely sure where exactly I should put it.

I own a HP D7-1450US Laptop and recently it has been on the fritz. During the last week or so the laptop has had its screen black out 3 times on me. Yet the backlight would still be on and my programs I had open would still be working. I know this because, although I could't see anything on the screen, I could still hear my music that I had playing. Now I don't want to do anything to my laptop before getting some feedback first and I was told by a few friends of mine that this was the place to ask.
I already asked a few people and they said that my graphics cards might be the problem and I should try updating it and see if that works. Others said that it might be something wrong with the screen or some cable might have been dislodged. A solution I had recently been told was that if this happens again I should take my battery out while the power cable is still connected then hold the power button down for 40 seconds and then replace my battery after a half hour or so. Would this be viable? If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

as you said, the problem most likely lies in either your video card having issues, your screen going faulty, or a lose connection somewhere.

unless the laptop has been subject to some rather harsh handling it would be hard to imagine a connection being lose. the only connection point which i have known to go bad after alot of use is the types that get built into "laptop hinges"

to test whether the problem is with your video card or your screen/connections try connecting to an external monitor or projector. if you get a video feed then most likely it is not the video card. do this when the screen blacks out on you.

it would be harder to determine if the problem is in the screen or hinge section but you could try adjusting said hinge to see if picture comes back (what were you doing when the image went black on you?). for an lcd issue i would not advise trying to fix this yourself unless you are well versed in electronics repair. a hinge you could probably fix if you could get the part, but again only if you're sure of what you are getting yourself into.
