So, I have a Toshiba P855-S5200
About a month back I upgraded my RAM, replaced my HDD with an SSD, and put the HDD in my optical bay drive as a 2nd drive.
Everything was working great until last week I started having a problem. At first, I would turn my computer on and the red TOSHIBA logo was a weird color and the screen looked like it was glitching out and the windows boot logo was all in weird colors and the computer would just power off before fully booting. Everything was typical glitch colors if that makes sense.
I tried booting a few more times but it just got worse and after a few tries I couldn't even get past the TOSHIBA logo before it shut down. I read a few threads with similar problems. It seemed most likely that my video card/mobo fried. I read something that made me think the RAM might be causing the problems so I reinstalled the original RAM.
Now, the computer seemed to turn on, and stay on, but nothing showed up on the screen at all. I ordered a new motherboard figuring the incompatible RAM did some damage to the mobo (does that happen?). I installed the new MOBO and same thing would happen, the laptop would power up and stay on but nothing on the display.
Frustrated, I started button smashing the keyboard and all of a sudden I heard the windows boot sound. My computer's fine! Its just a bad display. I tried hooking up to an external display and it worked. I hadnt thought to try this before because I was thrown off by the initial behavior from when the screen was glitching and the computer was shutting off immediately. Didn't seem like a screen issue at the time.
SOO, i just installed a replacement screen and it. still. doesnt. work.
At this, point I have tried replacing just about every part of this computer. MOBO, screen, ram, HD. I read that the inverter might not be working properly, but I believe thats part of the circuitry of the screen. If I shine a light on the screen I can see the faint image of my desktop, though it does look strange, possibly glitchy.
All I can think of now is replacing the LCD cable. I'm just really confused now about why the laptop starting glitching and shutting off, and why it seemed to be better when I replaced the RAM with the original. Why would the LCD cable be affected by the RAM? Maybe it was coincidence that the computer started working with the old RAM.
Both the mobo and the display are refundable so I'm not really out any money on these parts but considering the new SSD and RAM I put into it last month i'd like to salvage this computer.
Do you guys think it could be the LCDS cable? Im handy and fairly tech literate but by no means an expert. Are there any other possible issues I'm not considering?
