Problem with network file sharing

I'm trying to connect two PCs (one with win7 and one with win8) to a homegroup to allow file sharing between the two.

So I set up a homegroup with the win7 machine, changed the password to the one I desired, and went on to the win8 PC. I tried to connect to the homegroup I had set up which ended up failing saying 'network no longer available' or something like that. Tried hosting the homegroup with win8 PC and same thing was happening when I tried to connect the win7 PC to it. After many attempts on both PCs, I just decided to host homegroup from win7 PC again, and changed win8 network connection to public, and back to private. For some reason it connected fine then.

So I set a folder to share on win7 PC and a folder to share on win8 PC. The win8 PC is able to access the win7 folder no problem, but its not possible for the win7 PC to access the win8 shared folder. The error I get is that windows can't access that PC. The PC is turned on, its accessing the win7 computer no problem, but I just can't access the win8 PC. I tried 'diagnose' to no avail.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? It was my first time setting up a homegroup, but I can generally find my way around computers easily enough.

Both PCs are connected to the router wirelessly. Both are connected as a home group.

Also, what speeds should I expect for file transfer through a homegroup?
And is there a way to turn off the sharing of the win7 'User' folder? I just want one folder to be shared per PC.

If there's any more information that you need, please let me know. Would greatly appreciate any help in fixing this. Thanks!
