Question problem with reactivating - Samsung HD642JJ hdds

hi. so i am at my HDD's currently. they are old ones with ~500gb and i did not need them for a while, so now i do. they were disconnected from the device ~1year ago and are still in the case. i reconnected them via 4 total cables inside. 2 to the power supply and the other 2 to 2 sata channels on my mainboard. when i used them last time i used windows 7 or 8, and they worked fine. I am using Windows 10 now.

when i open the hard disk manager both disks appear (disk 0 and disk 1, disk 2 being my SSD in use)


now i get the messages:

"The system cannot find the file specified" when i want to add them as MBR.
"The specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size required for GPT disks." when i want to add them as GPT

i'm pretty sure that both HDDs are not defect (they are the same ones, from SAMSUNG ~2008 ~500gb).

do you think i could get them running again?

ok. so in BIOS it shows that sata ports are not connected. anyways they DO show up in device manager as "unknown device". if i "update drivers" at the device manager it says everything is up to date.

This thread started badly the moment u said "4 cables" SATA drives got 1 power cable and 1 data cable that's it.

yes exactly. and 2 hdds are connected with 2 power cables and 2 data cables then (1 power cable and 1 data cable each), resulting in a total of 4 newly connected cables.

i was opening my pc again and the HDD's are Samsung HD642JJ's

the drives still not working. showing up in "disk management" as 0mb unknown devices

Can you feel them spinning?
Not knowing what you have for a PC, UEFI can be blocking them since it would detect the foreign operating system on them. If you don't need the OS' you can use Diskpart's Clean command to erase the format & partition information and then reformat them again.

i cannot hear it spinning right now. i connected just one of them currently. should they be hearable all the time, or just on boot/access?

/edit: i opened the diskpart, and the drive does not appear there. it also does not appear anywhere else except in "disk management"

Unplug the power cable, wait ten seconds and then plug it back in. You should feel it spin up.
If it's not spinning then most likely the bearing or head(s) have become stuck/seized.

the second one does, actually! so one of them is spinning.

If you don t need to recover anything then you might as well see if you can free them up. Maybe have some fun in the process.

Imaging Laying them flat on a table and spinning them around fast. Clockwise/Counter-clockwise
What I want you to do is is that but about 4-6 inches above the table and drop them when you spin them so they land flat. Some people recommend putting them in a ziplock bag and freezing them first to help things unstick. Do this a few times trying the spin in both directions - and don't use the wife's good table. <grin>
See if that works.

If that doesn't work; the other option is to remove the cover and see whats stuck. This will render the drive useless for anything long term. Once dust gets in more damage will ensue.... Its 6 visible screws plus 1 more under the label. All usually use the same torx bit. A T8 bit is common.
if the bearing is stuck the heads will be parked off the platter but if the HDD's were powered off without the heads parking first then the heads would be stuck to the platters and you will need to break them free manually trying to not touch the platters (esp with your fingers). This sometimes get the drive working enough to rescue data.

good! i have put one of them into the freezer now.

should i do it with the other one (the one that spins up on plug in) also?

hi! so i played some rodeo with my HDD. I placed it on my chair and spinned to then let it drop on the floor (not to high as you said.).


It appears in the "Disk Management" but it shows the errors still, as it was before. :/

I ordered a new HDD meanwhile until a specialist got some time again to help on a solution, reactivating those two oldies one day would be great
