Question Problem with video card or monitor or cable

Hello All!

I am using a Samsung SyncMaster SA950 monitor that has real 120Hz (also can you tell me if this is a 4k monitor?) (https://www.samsung.com/us/business/support/owners/product/sa950-series-s27a950d/ click on full specs) and HIS ATI Radeon HD 5670 IceQ 1GB DDR5 128 bit (http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-531.shtml click specifications) connected with a DisplayPort cable, i have also a HDMI cable but i understand that the DisplayPort cable is the best to use. I can`t set it in windows 8 at 120Hz, i can set it only at max 1920 X 1080 32 bit 60hz, can you please tell me where it is the problem? the videocard card supports 120Hz? or i have a bad DisplayPort Cable? i think is not the original cable that came with the monitor, or i am doing something else wrong, please help!

1920x1080 Full HD. You might need the monitor drivers to get that refresh rate as an option. Or use a custom resolution program if the driver is not available.

As with most older graphics cards finding out what HDMI and DP versions it has is difficult. (It didn't really matter for most people until high refresh displays became mainstream)

However, most high refresh rate displays from that era used DVI for high refresh rate. You might need to use a dual link DVI cable to achieve that.

HDMI back then was typically limited to 60hz. Display Port should support it, but the display port on the monitor may not support frequencies above 60hz. DVI was available on many CRT monitors which often had higher refresh rates than LCDs, so that is why I assume the standard was used in the early days.

The video card might not support the bandwidth necessary, but I am not certain.

May I ask why you want this 9 year old mid-range graphics card to push 120hz?

Hello and thanks for clearing things for me, i have installed the monitor official drivers from the samsung support site. I can get rid of this video card but i don`t do gaming, i have office and watching HD big movies activity, but please advice me on a not so expensive videocard to push 120hz with displayport dual link dvi hdmi for my monitor

If you aren't gaming you don't need more than 60 Hz.

Best to leave it alone and you don't need a graphics card either.

That is expected of HDMI from that period. All LCD and Plasma TVs were 60hz input and there was no need for more. DP was mostly focused on features such as daisy chaining and being a professional monitor standard.

I don't think the cables are the problems. I suspect the monitor's scalar only accepts 60hz inputs on HDMI and DP. Dual link DVI is probably what was expected to be used then.

Just look for a Dual Link DVI cable and give it a shot.

I agree, there is no real reason to have a 120hz monitor unless you have high refresh content. General browsing and watching movies won't be effected by a higher refresh. The content will still be 24 FPS/30 FPS or on newer content 60FPS.

HD5670 is roughly equivalent to a GT740 DDR3. Depends on what you want to spend. GT 1030 would be a very late model card, low end, but it offers all but the latest techs from Nvidia. If you like AMD there are the RX550 to look at. (Keep in mind that a lot of these cards might not have DVI, and that may be the only way to get 120hz out of that monitor)

If you want cheaper/older than that, you can look at the GTX950, GTX750Ti or the slightly older R5 and R7 cards from AMD (R5-230, R7-240, etc).

Thank you, My monitor has single DVI and the video Dual DVI, so from these video cards you recommend me i have to look for DVI not Dual like my monitor right?

Also it has Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 1GB of ram and i can max to 1748

I want to try to reach 120Hz with both discrete and intergrated cards so bellow are pics with back the dvi`s but i want for you to help me identify with wich cables/adapters to buy so i can try with both cards because seems different.

That suggests support for dual link DVI on both GPUs. So you just need a Dual Link cable to test with. If Intel is correct, it shouldn't be able to do 120hz though. (I don't know much about Intel integrated graphics, not worth tracking for most enthusiasts)

PCIe is backwards and forwards compatible, all that changes is the available bandwidth. After that you only need the appropriate power supply for your chosen graphics card and operating system support for the drivers. Most of the ones I mentioned are low power varieties that don't even use additional power plugs.

I see GT1030 models with DVI ports out there. Should be plenty of choices.

i bought a Dual Link D DVI cable and working at 120Hz, besides some options from the osd menu now are available.

Though i will try to buy a more up to date videocard but cheap, ill check the ones you recomend me Thanks again!
