hi
i bought that new hdd and trying to installing it on my nas (my nas of qnap support that hdd) but the nas didn't recognize the hdd, so because i doesn't have any desktop pc to install that hdd on it i buy a pack to connect that hdd through usb, when i connect the hdd the computer doesn't show or recognize it so i go to computer management and than to storage management and trying to intialling that hdd but it doesn't matter if i try to do so through the gpt or the mbr-if i do so through the gpt its write that "the specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size" and if i trying to do so through the mbr it's says that "Cyclic Redundancy Check Error", i mention that is a new hdd right from the nylon package so that the hdd is probable not defective...
please help me
good day

This sounds concerning, @solidas! 🙁 The HDD should be able to pass both the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. If changing to SATA connection doesn't improve its performance. I'd strongly recommend contacting the reseller's or our Customer Support, but first you need to check the warranty of your WD Purple. Since it's brand new you should be able to RMA it and get a replacement.

Unfortunately, sometimes, mechanical hard drive could get damaged while shipping to the end customer, especially if they weren't handled properly during the shipment. 🙁

Hope this helps you, though. Keep me posted if you have more questions.

Hey there, @solidas!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the newly acquired WD Purple! 🙁 However, I'd strongly recommend you find a desktop (ask a friend even) to try connecting and initializing the WD Purple through a SATA connection, instead of externally via USB. This error could be coming from the miscommunication with the enclosure. Have you tried resetting the NAS and then check if the WD Purple would show up properly? What is the model of your NAS enclosure and do you have any other HDDs in it?
You will most definitely need to use GPT, if you format the drive in Windows. Otherwise you won't be able to use the full capacity. It might also be a good idea to test the WD Purple using our Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. Running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests will help us determine the health and SMART stats of the drive.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting!
