I am running a DV Editing system and my temps seem very high, I need to know what my options are to lower these temps without making my comp VERY loud. Heres the info

My normal Idle temps are around the 39-44 deg area and during a load they jump to around 49-55 deg My case temps can be anywhere from 30-35 deg and my Room temp is never over 23 deg ever. For one I wanna know if this would be a huge problem. Could I experience any lockups or anything from heat (I havn't yet) and if so how could I fix it. I woul like to keep the price under $300 CDN but if more is needed I would just have to do it. My business relys on a stable comp and if it crashed I could loose hours of editing.

My main causes of heat are
1) P4 2.53 (retail HS)
2) 5x HDDs (WD 1000JBs)
3) GF4 TI 4600
4) Matrox RT x.100 capture card
5) DVD Burner

My case is a Chenming Alum case with 2 80mm fans in the front 2 in the back and 2 on the PS. I have rounded cables to allow some airflow.

Now what I am planning on doing is seperating 4 of the HDDs (the ones on raid) and placing them in a second tower which I would tweak myself to work. Also I would be putting a AT Power Supply in there to take the strain off my 420w PS in my main case. Would this be a Ok idea or am I just stupid for even thinking of it.

By the way I would not be moving this comp ever, it will be sitting in the same place until I either upgrade or clean it.

Any advice you could give would be greatly appriciated.

if you're not experiencing lockups, your temps are fine. 55C is well within spec of any processor on the market

if you've got 4 case fans and you still want to lower temps, you could get more powerful case fans (which means louder), or if you've got room for more you could add a few Vantec Stealth 80mm fans. also make sure the airflow is set up properly (the two on the front blow in, the back ones are exhaust). or you could modify your case by cutting a hole in the top and creating what's called a "blowhole," and put a quiet 120mm fan up there. if you're fine with getting out a dremel and cutting your case some i'd say this is a good option.
if you're worried about harddrive heat, you could look at these coolers, though they'll take up space. these will only cool the hard drives, not improve overall case temps obviously.

anyhow, those are a lot of ideas for cooling, but if you're not experiencing lockups i'd say they're not necessary

Yeah I have the front blowing in and the back blowing out. Im glad that 55 is ok, My old Athlon 1000 ran at around 29-34 degs and never went above 38 so I was a little concerned after I finished playing Unreal 2 for 3 hours and found my temps so hot.

Thanks for your reply.

I might cut a hole in the top of my case for a 120mm fan(I have already performed this operation on my cuz's comp)

I wouldn't be worried about those temps.

But, if you want to try dropping them a bit and have access to your Vcore (CPU voltage) through BIOS or jumpers, try dropping it one notch and testing your system for stability. It might knock a degree or two off the idle and maybe 3 or 4 at full load... but if your system becomes unstable, you can put the voltage back to factory and rest assured there's still nothing wrong with the temperatures you reported.

If you want a whisper quiet system that has great cooling (read: overclockable) check out the Ice Berg 1 water cooling system. My brother has one in his case, and it keeps a Tbird 1.4 nice and cool.

eBay, kick ass!
