My friend recent upgraded his computer, going from a Celeron 533 to a new Athlon 1.2/266 MHz CPU housed on a A-Bit KT7a motherboard. As a part of the upgrade package, he also got 256 MB SDRAM of memory, heat sink & fan and an Asus V7100Pro GeForce 2 MX-400 video card. He's using the monitor, CD-Rom drive, sound card and hard drive from his orriginal computer.

For a day or so after the upgrade everything work fine...but slowly errors and conflicts became more and more frequent. He called the company which sold him the upgrade package and they've told him that he should format his hard drive and re-install windows. My friend has done this, but when he tries to re-install windows he gets error messages during installation - the computer is asking for files that aren't on the Windows 98 disk (its an orriginal, not a burned copy!).

Any ideas what would cause this? Any recommendations as to what to do?

Please help!!

Overheating, bad memory, or a weak powersupply are usually the culprits. Check them out in that order. Is the HSF on properly? Did you buy quality memory? What size powersupply are you using? It should be at least 300W.

Just do the OK-cancel-ok-cancel dnace until it is finished loading windows. When your done, it will again ask for the files, these are drivers for your devices-cancel out. Load the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, reboot, load the graphics card driver, reboot, then go into device manager and delete anything with ! exclamation marks. Hit "refresh" and install the drivers for the remaining devices.
