Hi there :)

So i have just decided to do my first build. Specs are as following:
Case: Fractal Define S
Motherboard: Asus z170-A
CPU: i5-6600K
CPU cooler: Coolermaster 212 evo
Ram: 16gb furyx - 2400 mhz
PSU: 750 evga g2 supernova
GPU: MSI gtx 970 4g gaming
HDD: An old 1tb seagate 5400rpm, and a 250gb 840 samsung ssd

So those are the specs, the assembly went fine, it powered on just fine. But ran into problems installing windows 10 Pro, 64 bit. It went through all of the installation but when it comes to the final parts of setting up the PC i get this message "Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware". And i can get no further in the installation process. First i tried to install it on the ssd and i get the error. But i have encountered a similar problem with that ssd in the past, so i tried installing on the mechanical drive which worked in the past. But here i got the same error. I'm suspecting the problem lies with the harddrives but honestly I'm a bit clueless. I have googled the line of error txt, but i only got solutions for windows 7, which i couldn't get to work for me. Hope someone out there has some knowledge on this, so I can start enjoying my new build :)

Thanks

Just clean the drive before installing windows on it (it's data destructive).
Its better to disconnect your HDD and leave only SSD during this and installation process.

You can do drive cleaning from windows setup. There must be an option for recovery/repair.
Find option that gives you command prompt and execute commands:
diskpart
list disk (this gives you list of available disk drives, find the one you are going to install windows on)
select disk x (x - is number of you determined in the previous step - should be 0, if no other drives are connected)
clean
exit

Now reboot and install windows normaly.

Hi again

Thanks for your quick reply! much appreciated.
I did the steps, however with no success, I ended up with the same error. Going to try it again with the mechanical though. Does it matter which sata port they are plugged in to on the motherboard?

The problem is often to do with how, or what interface mode you selected in the bios for your Sata based SSD drive and the Mechanical hard drive you have Martin.

When your in your bios Make sure the mode for the Sata interface is set Ahci mode, not Sata mode.
You may also have a motherboard where the Sata ports of the board are controlled via two Sata chip sets.

So you have to check in your manual if the case what Sata ports on the motherboard work with what sata chip, and each of the settings in the bios.
You can have a Intel Sata chip set for example and a ASmedia Sata chip set.

Both in any case should be set to Ahci mode for all Sata ports listed.

If you left the mode Set to Sata, then the error happens after the main part of the windows 10 install and setup because prior to choosing where, and what drive you wish to install windows too.
If Sata mode is selected as the interface mode the Sata driver must be installed prior to installation by clicking on the add driver option and locating the sata driver off the motherboard CD/ DVD driver support disk provided with the motherboard.

On the install page of windows where it asks you what drive, or where you wish to install it too.

I just checked the BIOS and the SATA controller was configured to AHCI. I tried to change sata ports on the motherboard to see if that randomly should work, however they where previously plugged in to sata ports marked for OS usage.
Do you guys have any other solutions as to what could be wrong?

Greetings, Martin:

I'm a bit confused - you say it's your first build, which I assume means that there is no pre-installed OS on the disk, right? If so, you need access to a second desktop to perform the diskpart procedure outlined by SkyNetRising and then connect the disk to your (new) computer. Make sure to check that the disk is not MBR. You can see this with the 'list disk' command. The built-in formatting procedure in Windows 10 Setup only works if the disk is GPT. But if the disk is new, you shouldn't have to format it. Just make sure it's GPT.

Here's a step-by-step guide to using diskpart when installing Windows 10:
http://www.neowin.net/news/guide-how-to-install-windows-10-from-a-usb-drive

The guide relates to a USB drive but the commands are the same for harddisks.

Best of luck,
GreyCatz.

Hi again

When i said first build, i meant it was the first time assembling on my own, i've had a custom computer but where a retailer had fixed it up. I used the old harddrives from that build in my new one.
I did the diskpart procedure through the "repair windows" function that turns up on the windows boot usb. from there i could do the commands. I just did that and convertet to GPT so I was sure it was this format. however i just got the same same result trying to install Windows 10. Do you reckon buying a brand new harddrive would solve the problem?

Thanks so much for the support by the way :)
