I am using Firefox 38 on Windows 7. I can download some pdf files, but not always. Sometimes I get the error

"C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Temp\[tempfilename].part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read." I also sometimes get the message "pdf file is corrupted"

I tried disabling add-ons and restarting in safe mode, but that didn't help either

I've also had problems just trying to install anti-virus programs. I had Panda antivirus and it worked fine. When I then installed AVG and it identified errors and had to reboot, I started getting the Blue Screen of Death. When I was able to reboot using system restore, I then tried to uninstall Panda. However, I can't reinstall it.

Similarly, when I try to re-install AVG, I keep getting messages saying "file is corrupt". I've also tried to install Spybot, Kapersky and they also are unable to download saying file is corrupt. I also tried to install UnThreat, but it just freezes when trying to download installation files

I've also tried to get new windows updates, but it said the updates failed

I was able to download AdwCleaner and it got detected some problems. But I still can't re-install AVG and the other antivirus programs.

EDIT: I suspect the issue is when AVG detected Panda as malware and I then uninstalled Panda. I tried following the steps here but they didn't work either:
