Problems running dual channel RAM

Hi all. Trying to run 2x4GB of RAM in two different motherboards now and having the same problem both times. If I run them in single channels, the boards read 8GB of RAM installed, 8GB usable. If I do what should, according to the manuals, get me dual channel, I get 8GB of RAM installed but only 4GB usable. Am I right in believing that is not what I should be getting? But if so, what should I be trouble-shooting? It's happening on two motherboards, so is it a problem with my RAM? They work fine in single channels, so I'm a little lost here...

I've tried it with both boards, both channels (ASUS boards, one the EVO R2.0 M5A99X and the other the M5A7L-M) (paired blue channels, paired black channels get me 8 installed, 4 usable, black and blue gets me 8 installed, 8 usable)

TIA for any help!

Solution
I got it fixed. Posting my own topic got me related topics to read which didn't pop up on my own search for some reason and it turned out to be a problem with my CPU itself, which I wouldn't have expected (but should have, as it was one of the few common denominators between the two boards). A few very carefully fixed pins (and a very scary fail to post that I corrected) and I now have 8 GB RAM running in dual mode. 🙂

But thank you for the reply! This is a new mobo, so I do need to see if the BIOS needs to be updated anyways.
