Question Problems with an Older Laptop

I have a Compaq Presario V5000, it will power on but I only hear the fan. I get no boot screen or any kind of screen and the dvd drive acts like it is trying to load a disk that is not there. I have also connected it to an external monitor and still get no screen. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Graphics hardware may have died or motherboard may be faulty.
If out of warranty, not worth the expense of repair.
Money would be better spent on a new, higher-specced laptop in my opinion.
