Problems with Booting

Hi all,
I currently have an ASUS G75VW laptop and it's about two years old. I've never had a single problem with the computer up until a few days ago, when I started the computer. I turned it on and after I had logged on, I went to go get some water. When I returned to my computer, it showed a black screen that displayed the words

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I searched on the internet for this problem and it seems relatively common. The first results I found told me to change the boot options order, which resulted with no luck. After I did that, I looked around a bit more and found some people saying that it is a hard drive or even an OS issue. It was late, so I slept and the next morning I started doing some more research.
I decided my best bet would be to contact ASUS customer support. I turned my laptop back on to get the exact wording or the problem, and much to my surprise, the laptop started. I should also add in that, the night before, I had removed the backplate to see if the connection on the HDD was alright. It seemed fine, until I went look at my BIOS again and found that it didn't even show my hard drive as a boot option anymore. I assumed it had wiggled itself loose or something, but I fixed that.
So I had my computer working for a while, but when I returned home and attempted to log onto my computer again, it went black and showed the same error from earlier.

So from what I have gathered, I think it isn't an OS issue or else it wouldn't have started up the other day, and it's probably a Hard Drive problem. I don't know for sure, I'm not very good with computers. What I'd like to know is if anyone else has had a similar problem and how exactly to fix it. I don't want to blow $300 on another nice hard drive.
Also, I don't have anything I need to save on my hard drive, so I'm not against buying a new one if that is the only option.
