Problems with CPU overheating

My cpu's fan is defective, as it makes a grinding noise on startup, and now does not make a noise at all because that it is not moving. The fan doesn't spin, and I put a huge house fan next to my computer to make the fan work. Monitoring my cpu's temps with Speedfan, I found that my cpu's fan is running at 19 rpm!

That's horrible! And it is a small fan with a complete aluminum heatsink. I just redid the thermal paste and re-positioned it, and now it is not working after a month. Playing Battlefield 4, it overheats until complete computer shutdown. I have an AMD FX-8120 with a mid-tower case. I am on a tight budget, so I need to find a cheaper fan/heatsink that will do the job.

I am pretty sure that a Hyper 212 Evo will not work... I might post pictures of my case because I don't know how to identify/measure it. I would love some help, and I am not a computer expert, but I do know a thing or two. I am 12 years of age, and looking to build my own PC when I can afford it. As of right now, I have to settle for what I have, and upgrade to what I can.

You're lucky the CPU has good throttle control. Otherwise you'd have burned it up. When it gets to hot, it slows its freq down to save itself. You were running with a lot less performance that normal.

What case do you have?

you can purchase a new fan to install in place of the defective fan. For cost effectiveness this is the cheapest route.

I can't remember if the stock fans for that CPU are 80mm or 100mm fans though. Get a high pressure and high CFM fan to replace it. Make sure it is a 4 pin PWM fan so the motherboard can control the fan speed.

Measure the height from the top of the cpu/bottom of the cooler to the side panel on your case. Then we can look fo a cooler that will fit. If you can't, then I suggest you get a low profile cpu cooler eg Noctua NH L12 - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=207_23&products_id=19797 - 93mm high - which will fit 99% of cases.

well... the evo is a standard tower fan... about 160mm tall. 99% of mid/full tower cases will fit it.

If you don't have a tower case you could get any number of cpu fans such as a Scythe Shuriken SCSK-1000 or Thermaltake MaxOrb

I would suggest the noctua but since the NH L12 is like x2 more expensive then the evo i figured it was out of his budget

Junky just some FYI, this thread you posted has a lot of misinformation, The cooler's for the Phenom II's and Athlon II's have a 70mm fans not an 80mm. The CPU coolers for the 6000's and 8000's are larger and have a larger fan then the Phenoms due to there heat production. I just worked on one so this info is still fresh in my mind.

just an example that for 8 bucks he can just replace the fan and be good unless he is overclocking it and got poor thermal paste applied

I got a bad computer from CyberpowerPC. The first one had red matrix-like numbers going down the screen, and was being annoying. So we sent it back, got a new one, and they kept delaying until the warranty expired, so I can't call them back. (NEVER BUYING FROM THEM AGAIN!).

well the nhl12 is about as good a "low profile" cpu cooler as you can find. so if you're willing to spend that much it will be worth it.

yeah... those boutique pc makers generally are all crap. You typically can make a better pc on your own for a lot less.
