Problems with digicam fotos prints

Hi
I'm printing digicam fotos with ACDsee
Most of them print fine - but with some either the figure or the
background is a grey colour with loss of definition, even in sepia the
result is the same. I have tried printing the offending pics with
several programs with similar results

They all appear fine so there's no way to distinguish between the good
and bad before printing resulting in many wasted pages and ink

I've just discovered that i've printed the same picture twice
Once in landscape (4 different pics to a page) which is FINE
and one in portrait (4 different pics to a page in a batch of 7 pages)
which is NOT - which seems to discount the bad digicam images idea

So i'm baffled

Can anyone help me resolve this problem please

Canon pixma ip4000
I originally tried the Canon 'Easy photo print' but with similar
results, that's what made me try ACDsee
