Problems with high ping

Hello there.

I'll try to keep this short and to the point. I use AT&T U-Verse for my internet/phone/cable. Not great, I know, but it's worked fine for me up until recently and there are no other good providers in the area sadly. Up until about 2 weeks ago I haven't had too many issues with it. Got the router replaced a few times last year for random reasons but that was it. Recently I've been having connection issues including erratic and/or high ping and erratic download/upload speeds. Before this happened my ping was generally somewhere between 18 ms and 25 ms. Now it hardly goes below 120 ms.
I'm not super tech-savvy but I did run ping tests and trace route tests, as well as try things such as restarting my router and turning all the connected devices off and on. I've had techs come out to my house twice in the past two weeks, neither of which knew what they were doing. One replaced my router, which seemed to help for a whole 2 hours before the ping shot back up. I'm sick of talking to those people so I've decided to do research on my own.
Here's some info that might help:

  • ISP: AT&T U-Verse Broadband
    Router: Motorola NVG589
    Devices Connected: ~4
    Belkin wireless adapter
I run Windows 7 64 bit on a custom built PC
Things I've tried to fix/diagnose the problems:

  • Run ping/speed tests on speedtest.net to check for packet loss/ping
Run traceroute/ping tests with cmd prompt to check for packet loss/ping
    Restart router
    Replace router
AT&T service techs checked the in-house line as well as the box in my neighborhood
I suppose I could try hard wiring my PC to the router or whatever but I haven't gotten that far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my patience with my ISP is running out.

Thanks in advance

Solution
If line tests look normal then it is likely just a wireless issue. Definitely hardwire to see if it improves it. You could try changing the channel the wireless broadcasts over in the firmware and make sure that the firmware is up to date while you are it it.
