problems with installing amd fx 6300

So i bought a cheap custom built pc for just the basic pc gaming. Recently i decided to upgrade the cpu i have. The mobo i have is the Asrock n68c-gs4 fx the and the bios is 1.3. After installing my new Fx 6300 properly i turned the pc on, The pc powers up normally all lights an fans on. The problem i believe is my ram, i have read that the fx 6300 requires ddr3 and i do indeed have ddr2. Before i buy new ram can anyone confirm that this is likely my problem? Powers up fine but its like nothing is connected to monitors. I thought i would atleast be able to get into bios but then again i am fairly new to all of this.

The 6300 isnt even listed as a supported CPU

The BIOS is up to 1.50 now.

I also find it very odd you still have a motherboard that supports both kinds of RAM:

- Dual Channel DDR3/DDR2 Memory Technology*
- 2 x DDR3 DIMM Slots
- Supports DDR3 1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 16GB**
- 2 x DDR2 DIMM Slots
- Supports DDR2 1066***/800/667/533 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 8GB**

The BIOS is up to 1.50 now.

You cant install DDR3 on a DDR2 mobo. They're not compatible with each other

Did you look up the mobo i listed? If you did the you would see that there is 4 slots for ram, 2 for ddr2 and 2 for ddr3?

yes i agree it is a very old mobo but i have read of other people using the exact same cpu on the exact same mobo. My only question was being i was using ddr2 from my old cpu, would that cause the problem im having being it requires ddr3

While the RAM could be an issue (IF the 6300 were to work, it would need the DDR3) I doubt it would be the only issue at this point.

Personally, I would recommend a platform switch to a modern setup. Even if you buy DDR3 that would still be an older platform (as DDR4 is the new standard)

That board is a strange cookie.

While FX-8 core CPUs are not on the support list, right there in the headline of the board on the main page is "8 core CPU support".

The first thing I would do is put your old CPU back in and update the BIOS to the latest version.

The second thing is yes, swap in some DDR3 RAM. That CPU simply does not support the DDR2 ram you have. The separate slots are a pre-requisite to having both AM2 and AM3 support.

Thank you so much for your information! I am planning on building a new modern rig in the coming months just wanted this to work until then. Dont really mind spending the 60 bucks on some ddr3 ram right now. I just wanted to know if that could be my problem being that i have read numerous other places this combo working. But they were all using ddr3, didnt know if just that mixmatch could cause my problem

Ok this makes perfect sense. My bios is 1.3 and that's what i have read the cpu requires but it couldn't hurt to updated the bios. Thanks so much, i should have new ram early this week ill let you know how it goes!

None of the FX and A series CPU's can use DDR2 ram. The memory controllers only can use DDR3 so no matter what the configuration you have will not work for this one reason. The last AMD CPU's that could use both DDR2 and DDR3 were the Phenom II's and Athlon II's. If you truly want it to work then the DDR3 ram is necessary since the CPU does not support DDR2 ram.

Correct. Memory controller is onboard on that CPU, it straight up doesn't handle DDR2.

Thanks so much Paul for respond. Fortunately went and got the ddr3 ram and boom fired up. Haha regardless i just dropped a bunch of money on a completely new build. But for anyone wanting to use the fx 6300 in the board listed it here it will work as long as your bios are 1.3 or newer
