problems with laptop hdmi to tv with games

so when i connect my computer to my tv the desktop fits perfectly. the problem seems to be with some games the screen will shrink when they are launched. most of the time its tolerable but i just tried to play l4d2 and it was a little 6x8 box in the middle of the screen. ive tried the picture settings on the tv and tried messing around with the display options with no good results. any help would be great. thanks

Look for display settings within the game's setup or preferences.

If Nvidia graphics, go to the Nvidia control panel, and set up the screen resolution there also for the TV screen attached.

There is also an option the change the scaling (stetching ) under "adjust desktop size and position"
