Problems with my FX-8320

I recently got a new motherboard as my old one didn't have good enough VRM cooling (none at all) yet my CPU is still throttling. Could this be the cooler or a defective motherboard.

This is a screen shot showing AOD and HWMonitor which is there to show the frequency that it has dropped to and also the temps of the motherboard and CPU.

FX-8320
Corsair VS550W PSU
ARCTIC Freezer 13CPU cooler (95mm)

If any other hardware is needed just ask.

I had this problem before i changed motherboard. should i send this one back as it doesnt seem to be making a difference?

Lots of people here vouch for the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo so it should do.
I personaly have the Noctua NH-D15S, more expensive but it's a really really great cooler that I know I can use again if I change my rig.
You mobo is a really good one too, so I agree with Tradesman1, change the cooler

Think the Asus Sabertooth is very good also - runs about $25-30 more, but the GB should be fine

I personaly have the Noctua NH-D15S, more expensive but it's a really really great cooler that I know I can use again if I change my rig.

Hi again LeKeiser, i changed my motherboard and the thermals dont seem too bad, the bill is soon totting up for this build haha. Yet im still not sure what is wrong with my system. First i was told it was the motherboard, i changed that and still problems. Do you know if the temps ont hat motherboard are ok? they seemed a little high at around 60 degrees or is that ok?

as i said i used to have that bad asus board and had this problem with throttling. Was told it was the power phase on the motherboard so i got this motherboard that has better power phase for the CPU. The problem is still happening but not sure why? Dont really want to fork out another £60 for a cooler and the problem still persist. Suppose i could buy the parts and experiment and if they dont work return them.

As mentioned initially, I was leaning to the CPU cooler, I'd want a H7 or 212 EVO at a minimum with a 8320

For a eight core Amd FX cpu running at it`s default maximum factory default clock speed of 3.5 Ghz with a tempreture of.

at 53c And an Artic Freezer 13 cooler fitted to it, with a prime 95 test running it is ok.

If you are puzzled as to why the cpu is dropping in frequency.

It is due to two things that need to be changed in the bios of the motherboard.
If you wish the cpu to run at a constant maximum default clock speed of 3.5 Ghz.

Then first of all check the thermal throttle, or shutdown tempreture set in the bios for the cpu in Oc.
Turn off the amd cool and quiet option also in the bios of the motherboard.

Then save the changes before you exit the bios.

Let windows load.
And then go to the power options of windows, found in control panel.

Set the power profile to High performance.

And apply the settings.

The core speed of the cpu will then stay at a fixed maximum speed of 3.5 Ghz all of the time when the system is running.

How do you do this?
"Then first of all check the thermal throttle, or shutdown tempreture set in the bios for the cpu in Oc." i have already got CnQ off and it is in high preformance mode but dont know how to access this setting in the bios?

I trust AMD Overdrive, and it shows you have 20° margin, so it seems that you don't have to change your cooler. If you want to overclock, that's different. As I said, I know the Noctua and that's the one I would recommend. But the other alternatives are good too (the Cooler Master for example)

I ran the test again and im pretty sure it is the cooler, when i left it for longer and disabled some things in the bios it didnt drop in frequency until the margins got close to 10 degrees.

Im tempted by the Noctua NH-D15 (not the silent one) but is a little expensive, Are there any coolers under £50 that preform similar or should i just go for the noctua (£67) as it will last for a long time?

Well the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo would be a good choice I guess.
But I know that the Noctua (S version) will last me more than one configuration, so I prefered to buy this expensive cooler with that aspect in mind. It's an investment, but my computer is also, so...

Cheers for the reply. Ill probably go for the NH-D15 or 14 i think and do you know what that other guy was talking about when he said about the bios menus and that you could turn off thermal throttling?

In the Bios menu, you can set the max temperature of the CPU, before it shuts down.
AMD Cool'n Quiet has to be turned off if you want to overclock your CPU.
I haven't overclocked mine, I'm still happy with it @stock

Ok i went for the NH-D15 in the end so just waiting for that to arrive. depending on temps ill probably overclock but i hear this is the best air cooler going so should be alright i suppose. Thanks for the replys though!
