Problems with New Build

Having a few problems with my latest build. On first boot the system
powered up properly but hung in detecting the IDE drives. I can boot
with either the hard drives or the DVD drives connected to the
mainboard but not both. I am pretty sure I have the jumpers set
correctly for Master and Slave. Any thoughts on what could be causing
this? Also when I first powered on the computer the CPU and Memory
were reported correctly (Athlon 2700, memory at 200MHz) on POST but
after working on the IDE drives they are now reporting as Athlon 1500
with memory speed of 100MHz. Any suggestions on what caused it and how
to fix it? I have listed my specs below:

MSI K7N2-Delta 2-LSR
Athlon XP 2700+
Crucial 512MB 3200
Geforce FX5200
Seagate 20GB IDE
Maxtor 80GB IDE
NEC DVD-RW
Creative PC-DVD1240

Thanks in advance!

-Mike

We are sounding like a broken record lately...PSU could be going or
not up to par.
IDE cable bad
Don't use CS (cable select) with any drives.
Clear the CMOS set defaults.

Sorry if asking the same thing that has been asked. I searched the
newsgroups and didn't see anything exactly like my problem.

I hope it isn't PSU because I just bought a new Antec case and 350W PSU
at the recommendation of this group. Was going to get generic but
decided against it. I am going to assume this isn't problem until I
can rule out all else.

I will buy a new IDE cable tonight and see if that helps.

Not using CS on any drives...all jumpered to be master or slave.
I will use clear CMOS jumper to reset tonight.

OK, changed the cable on IDE Channel 2 and now boots just fine.
Thanks for all the help.

I am still trying to solve another issue. I can't get the MB to
recognize the CPU properly. It is running as an XP1500 instead of an
XP2700. I also had to do a repair install on Windows XP and then
reinstall all the drivers so I haven't had much chance to try it out.
Hope to get to it this weekend!

There are no jumpers on the board for FSB and I tried to force in BIOS
with no luck. I set the voltage to the spec from AMD and still no
luck. I will continue to fiddle.

I am not quite ready for RAID yet but hope to get there soon. Do you
have SATA or IDE drives? I have built in IDE RAID capability but
probably should updgrade my 20GB to another 80GB drive before I RAID.
The drives are IDE though, not sure if I will get the same performance
boost?

Now that it is running, how do you like it? I have one running and it
seems rather quick for the cheap cpu on it (2200xp 266). It does run
the kids games rather well, so it will do for now.

How do you have the jumpers set on the board? What about in the
frequency and voltage control? This board is known to fall back to a
100mhz bus if it thinks it has a bad overclock (I have seen mine do that).

Good luck with the fixes.

I just stuck a cheap RAID card in this one too, I forgot to get the
version with it when I bought the board <slaps forehead - DOH!>. :-O
So now it is running with 2-120s striped and is rather quick for the
fooling around we do on this box.

In the cell menu, there are settings for FSB, etc. Have you set them
there? It would appear that you can adjust the multiplier and FSB, so I
would check there for correct settings.

My RAID is IDE. I have another system with SATA on it and both seem
really quick. If you are going to raid them, be sure they match to
achieve the best possible performance.
