Bought the witcher 2 yesterday and downloaded, I was very excited to play as it looks wonderful... but when I click play, nothing happens. Not even a launcher. Steam will just open a quick box saying "launching game" or something like that and then just nothing. It won't open even with admin on steam and admin on the witcher. I've reinstalled, checked integrity of files, rebooted my pc and nothing works... any ideas?
systems specs:
i5 3570k
asus p8z77 v pro
intel hd 4000 (until my 7950 arrives from RMA :/ came DoA)
8gb (2 x 4gb) mushkin 1333 ram
CM silent pro 700w psu

Solution
Hi, I'm from CD Projekt Red. This issue might be related to the game's registry keys, especially if it is accompanied by repeatedly reinstalling .NET Framework 4. Try using this registry fixer: http://wpc.4d7d.edgecastcdn.net/004D7D/files/Tools/Registry_Check_DD.exe . When it asks about Installation Path it is of utmost importance that you input the correct path, by default it is c:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2 but it may be different, depending on where you installed Steam.
Try shutting down steam, then right-click and choose run as administrator from the drop down menu. When steam boots up, run your game. I had that same problem with several other games and that fixed my problem 🙂 Hope this works for you as well

From the steam forums. I don't know what you've tried.

Hey guys, I found an aswer. Just go into the following folders: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2\bin and open the "witcher2" aplication file, and it should run, maybe after some messages.

First problem was the launcher loop and how nothing happened when attempting to start TW2. This was solved by uninstalling the game and closing Steam. Launching steam with admin rights (right click exe) then reinstalling. It worked first time for me. Do NOT give Steam admin rights via properties -> compatability as it messes up.

http://en.thewitcher.com/dotnet/

Go there, download the hotfix, then run it.. It'll ask where to install the files, just put it anywhere, and then manually put the files in.. witcher2.exe goes into program files, steam, steamapps, common, the witcher 2, bin, and the other file goes into the cookedpc directory. Hope that helps. You might wanna make backups of the two files before you copy over them though.

Thanks man. This fix works perfectly. Although, I do get a warning about how it failed to find activate.exe, but I just skip that and everything works fine. Thanks again.

There does seem to be a lot of people claiming it broke after the last round of patches. Might need to just wait a bit for a new patch to come if these don't work.

Solution

Hi all, i just recently got the steam version and was having the same problems as stated at the start of this thread. but this above fix has now got things working! thank you!

Thank you! works great now, game launches and everything

Two things you should know about this fix:

1: The installation path is broken ->
It forces the "\Program Files(86x)" part to the end of any path you give it, so after giving it the correct path remember to delete the "\Program Files(86x)" from the end of the path.

2: You must give it the path to the place where the actual witcher2.exe resides ("bin" folder), not the main folder where the launcher is.
