Processor too weak for gpu?

Hi,

I am curious to see what the community thinks about this:

So I am going for a 1070 8gb msi, but a i5 7600. Is the processor too weak for my gpu? If so, what processor should I upgrade to. Also does having a weaker processor than the gpu wear down it in anyway?

Thanks.

That is a good enough CPU for the 1070. However, if you want to play at high refresh rates/frame rates then you will have more frame rate dips with a 4 core CPU and no hyperthreading. The safe bet would be to go with the tried and true i7 7700. If on a budget the R5 1600 will give you less average frame rates but you will have a more consistent frame rate with fewer dips. Try looking for benchmarks that have the 0.1% and 1% lows listed, such as the ones from gamers nexus.
If you game at 60hz, your CPU is plenty and can drive your GPU just fine.

Hmmm okay I am planning to be playing at around 100hz refresh rate. The problem with i7 is expensive. I am getting a 144hz refresh rate monitor (ASUS VG248QE). Can you adjust the refresh rate to where you want?

Then the Ryzen 1600 would be your best choice if you want a more budget-friendly option than the i7 7700k. The i5 will have frame rate dips because it has only 4 threads. Here is an example:
http://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/2875-amd-r5-1600x-1500x-review-fading-i5-argument/page-4
You can see the 0.1% and 1% on the 6600k are significantly lower than the 1600x, those are frame rate dips.
The ASUS VG248QE is a tried and true monitor and works 50-144hz range. You will be able to set your refresh rate.

Okay, that's great I will get that processor. Also what about this monitor: Acer XF240H. I have read that it is very good too. If I buy this one, i will be saving $100 which can go towards the i7 7700.

That's a newer monitor, and it has freesync too. Looks like a solid option to me. You have the choice to get an RX 580 and use the freesync too, you might have to drop some settings in heavier titles compared to the 1070 though. Freesync is pretty much free on the monitor, so I'd say i7 7700 plus the Acer would be a solid choice regardless.

How long have you had it for? And what refresh rate do you play on? Does it over heat?
