Hi all,

I want to upgrade my computer (Dell Dimension 5000, chipset Intel 915G, processor Pentium 4 520 2.8 GHz).

I looked at a Pentium D 945, but I'm not sure whether the chipset supports it...

My budget is about 200 EUR, can anybody tell me what is the best processor I can get for this budget?

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure that the 915 chipset doesn't support dual-core cpus. The best you can upgrade to is something from the 600 series of pentium 4's. They have a 2MB cache and you can get something like a 650 that runs @ 3.4Ghz.

Hmm, with only 512MB of ram, i doubt a dual core CPU would really help you..
If i were in you, i'd get 1GB of ram, if you have free slots in the mobo..

this is a 3 year old post. No one from the original thread will probably answer you.

If you are in the United States or Canada, Ebay.com is the best place to find good prices and large selection on Pentium 4 CPUs.

I just purchased an Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.46GHz 1066MHz LGA775 CPU from StarMicro for $75. Apparently, it's the fastst processor they made for 915's. IT has 2MB of L3 and 512K of L2 cache. I'm waiting for it to arrive - hope it works.

Here's the link: http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=656
