Hi,

I want to upgrade my CPU, without having to buy any other hardware, just the CPU also specifically AMD.

Please suggest me a CPU worth upgrading from the Phenom X4 970.

My main usage of the PC is to play BF4. I currently get from 35-80 fps in the game depending on the map, but sometimes feels laggy.

Price range: 200$ or 12,000 INR

My PC specs
AMD Phenom X4 970 BE 3.5 Ghz Quad Core
Cooler Master 212 Hyper Evo Push configuration
ASUS M-88 EVO Mother Board
Sapphire AMD 7850 2GB OC Edition
Corsair Vengeance 2x4 GB RAM
500GB Seagate HDD
1 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
500 W VIP PSU
Cooler Master HAF 912 Cabinet (6 Fans)
Dell 2240L 21.5” IPS Monitor
Logitech G 105 Keyboard
Razer Deathadder 3500 DPI Mouse

The Piledriver architecture in the FX 8300 series is slightly slower in single core performance than the Phenom's, but it's faster in multi-thread. As games become more multi-threaded you will notice the advantage of an FX chip.

That's my MOBO

Alright, it still supports the CPUs I mentioned.

True. But will be like a "upgrade" from the Phenom? may be! But i guess with the price range and only AMD FX 6300 or 8300's series seems like a viable option.

What i want to know is which one would be the best option. Also i am no hurry to do this.. so there something come out in the near future that I should consider too.

Thanks

Ok so what I did instead is OCed the 970 BE to 3.8 Ghz, run stable, tested through Intel burn test & Prime. How ever i get temperature 40 C as idle & 58 C on load. C&Q is disabled. Hyper 212 evo on PUSH PULL config with CM sickleflows.

Are the temps fine?

Although 58C is still below the threshold of 62C for that chip, it would be best to try to lower your temps. Did you increase your voltage from stock? A 300mhz increase could probably work on stock voltage. So try stock voltage and increase block and multiplier and see how high you can get stable before your system crashes. Check temps and let us know.

The temperature isn't all too bad considering IBT puts a lot of stress on the cpu. During gaming under stock voltage shouldn't reach that high. What you could try is to reapply thermal paste, paste tends to harden and lose its conductivity over the years. With new paste you'll probably gain a couple of degrees. Since you are at stock voltage try to see if you can get to 4.0Ghz, your chip might just do it.

I reduced the volt to 1.35 kept the same settings.. 17.5x218 = 3.81 Ghz Idle Temp is 37 & load is 54 c. I had tried 4 ghz but able to strike a balance, for a stable lower temp settings. What would you recommend as the apt setting to reach 4 Ghz. I recently applied thermal paste, will clean & do it again over the weekend.

Most likely your chip will get to 4.0 with a bump to 1.45v but that will increase your temps by maybe 1 or 2 degrees. Now that is still within the safe range for this processor. You want to check for proper mounting pressure and also that there is good airflow inside your case to allow the cpu fans to suck in cooler air. As for ram, it seems normal overclock since you increased your fsb speed.

so i increased the multiplier to 19 x 206 volt @ 1.425 got 4 Ghz stable. On load Temps reach to 57 while BF4 it reaches to 50-52. What i am little concerned is it idles at 40-42 C. May need to check on the thermal paste & Heatsink placement.
