I have an AMD A8-5545m, and if you know anything, this was not my greatest pick for Laptop. The main reason I was for it was because it was Quad-Core, and didn't realize that 1.9 GHz wasn't very good for gaming and recording PC Games and Elgato Gaming. Doesn't help that the GPU is integrated..so originally with the correct OBS settings, I could record PS4 and PS3 gameplay, without lag. Heck, even have a 480p webcam.
But now after suddenly recording Wii gameplay, suddenly preview mode takes 50-60% of my CPU, which was what my CPU was when I was RECORDING. Now suddenly gameplay lags when I shoot a gun, and there was a massive pixelated line though my gameplay. This (understandably) makes me VERY angry, and prevents me from what I have put massive amounts of hours into.
Could this just be after a year of heavy use from a not so powerful processor? I've checked and I don't have a virus, but System and Compressed Memory takes about 10%, and random Windows operations take at least 10-20% altogether. I'm considering getting the Intel i5-6300HQ in a new laptop. I have my reasons for having a Laptop instead of a Desktop.
So, should I have expected this? Or did I just make a bad choice with my current Laptop?

Sudden lag spikes sound like thermal throttling, background processes stressing the CPU (Windows update can be a massive resource hog if it gets stuck), or a corrupted driver.

I too am looking at a i5-6300HQ, moving up from an i7-640m. Think it will suit my needs well.

I did check with Malware-Bytes, nothing malicious. Might be Windows updates. Idk, tried going to an older version of Elgato, and nothing changed. If I can't fix it I'm just gonna sell this Laptop. How could I find if a driver got corrupted?

Pop open task manager and see if a svchost.exe is spiking CPU usage.

Drivers - you could uninstall + reinstall graphics drivers as a starting point.

Sorry for the wait time.
I can't seem to find svchost.exe to be anywhere. However System and Compressed Memory takes 2-10% of usage, and (of all things) my track-pad can take 5% -_-
I've updated Windows and nothing has really changed.
Should I try updating CPU drivers? Though I doubt that there would be any updates.

No drivers there.

Is disk usage % high at times of lagginess by any chance?

No, disk usage is 0-1%.
I did find svchost, but it only took up 12% at the beginning of recording, but stopped afterwords. System and Compressed Memory is taking up 12-15% though.
However, Memory is at 30%
Also, a desktop manager is taking 5%, I'm about ready to throw this piece of crap out the window
It appears that everything is fine when I'm not recording, but then every single little Windows program has to run, I mean come on. System Interrupts takes up 5%. Literally anything and everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Check the Windows power settings when plugged in. You may also want to download a utility such as HWMonitor and look at the CPU core speeds when stressing the laptop to make sure it's not overheating & throttling speeds.

So it's been a month since the HD issues appeared. I've actually resorted to recording in 480p and rendering in 720p. I tried using HWMonitor but I couldn't really understand it, but my CPU might be reaching full voltage when recording in 720p. I honestly don't know.
