My niece who is a teacher is getting a new Dell. The default
productivity software is WordPerfect. She needs MS Office. She can
get Dell to install @ $249 or she can buy the student/teacher @$149 &
install herself. Will she have any trouble installing MS Office and
will it coexist happily with WordPerfect?

Thanks for you help.

I have both installed on one of mine. They co-exist.

If she wants to save some money, have her take a look at Star Office (by
Sun Microsystems -- free for educational usage) and Open Office (the
free open source derivative of it). They are both very compatible with
MS Office (can export to .doc, .xls, .ppt and even write pdf's) and
currently the only main issue is with macros (not a major concern for
most people). I'm a fourth year engineering student and Star/Open has
been my Office solution for the last couple years without any major
issues. They too will have no problems coexisting w/ WordPerfect.

At the very least it's worth a shot. You can even have Star/Open Office
installed with MS Office without any conflict. Plus as I mentioned
earlier, the ability to export files to PDF (adobe acrobat format) may
be invaluable for teachers.
