"Professional" GPU VS Consumer GPU

Alright, i'm sure this question has likely been thrown around many times before but my searches don't really give me a solid definitive answer. So, is there any real benefit in buying a Quadro or FirePro over their consumer parts? Like, would I get any real benefit? Couldn't a consumer card handle professional applications as well at a considerably lower price point?

If you're planning on doing real professional work there is huge differences between those cards. There are folks more qualified than I here to explain more if you need. But needless to say there is a reason they are more money, and still around.

I kind of thought the same thing, but as far as from what I kind of understand one of the man differences is that the pro cards have some features that are normally turned off in consumer cards, but are otherwise the same thing. But, do those features really make a difference in the grand scheme of things?

certified drivers. Expensive, hefty, and powerful programs such as the CAD software SolidWorks only works properly on certified GPUs, usually only those from the Quadro and Firepro lines. This is because the certified drivers are specifically aimed at professional software and are optimized for certain features/tasks that gaming GPUs would not be able to accomplish. For example, from my SolidWorks experience, a quadro cards performs much better for numerous reasons: viewports are run properly (viewports do not run properly on gaming GPUs), better handling of large 3D files, less artifacting. Also, Quadro cards support 10-bit color.

In terms of creation of professional graphics, yes. Theres a reason why even old used ones still sell well.

That said you could "get your start" using a consumer card, but the reality is you may as well get the real thing if youre serious.

Besides the fact the cards are designed for the professional software and the gaming cards aren't one really big factor is support. If you are using a gaming card and having an issue with your professional CAD software and you call the mfr or Nvidia for help they will tell you good luck and hang-up on you. If you are using a professional card like a Quadro they will give you full tech support and help you with your issues.
