Programs in the Background

I've been installing 2K on a lot of computers lately and I was wondering if there were a decent way of turing off programs that run in the back ground on start up. I use msconfig in XP and 98 and I know that 2k doesn't have that. I have also gone into the registry and can get most programs stopped there, but I'm not the worlds greatest expert when it comes to modifying the registry. Anyhoo, any hints or ideas would be nice.

Thanks

Which programs? Most of the ones you see running in task manager are services which can be started and stopped in the control panel or from the command line with "net start" and "net stop"

run regedit
do a search for RUNONCE

It will come up 2-3 times and should list programs that run at startup.

Also, next to RUNONCE there should be a RUN that will also contain programs that run at startup.
