Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim (More info?)
For older flight sims I just bought the final component for my Windows 98
box for playing those older games. Most of this stuff is stuff I've
collected over the last couple of years with spare change or trading stuff
with other people. But I can finally have a 1999 and prior box that will
have a native 3Dfx card and Windows 98SE.
Anyways, here's the setup:
(1) Shuttle SN41G2
http://global.shuttle.com/Product/Barebone/brb_OverView.asp?B_id=11
(2) Ahtlon XP 1800+
(3) 512MB Crucial PC 2100 DDR
(4) Voodoo 5500 AGP (yay!)
(5) Onboard ALC650 5.1 audio
(6) 45GB Ultra 100 HD
(7) 15" LCD ProView Monitor (1024x768)
Flight Gear:
(1) CH Fighterstick USB
(2) CH Pro Pedals USB
(3) CH Pro Throttle USB
(4) Saitek PC Dash 2 (also known as P8000)
I plan on adding all the classics:
- Jane's Sims:
- ATF Gold
- Longbow 2
- F-15
- USAF
- IAF
- Fleet command
- WWII Fighters
- 688(i)
- F/A-18 (however that will probably run best on my current machine)
- Comanche 4
- Total Air War
- MiG Alley
- F/A-18 Korea
- Flanker 2.0
- European Air War
- A-10 Cuba!
- B-17 Flying Fortress The Mighty 8th
- Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator
- Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 (love that one)
- EEAH/EECH (however I have that running great on my current PC)
- Falcon 4 1.08 (yes, yes, yes I know there's SP4 and FF3, but that's for my
newer machine)
- Flying Corps Gold
- Red Baron II (3D)
And a few other non-flight sims:
- Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed
- Descent 2
- Descent 3
- Crimson Skies
If anyone has any suggestions before I deep dive into this project, I'd
greatly appreciate it. Most appreciative would be if anyone knows if there
is a trick to get some of these sims running without the CD. I would LOVE to
be able to run all of this without the need for a CD. I think I have no-CD
fixes for most, but not sure about others. Hopefully the AthlonXP is
powerful enough for everything. I also hope that a 45GB HD will be enough! I
may have to consider going to an 80GB HD (just don't want to blow more money
than I have to), but most of these are less than 500MB installed, so we will
see.
My ultimate goal is to find an inexpensive used projector and use that in a
simple mocked up cockpit. I could retire and play these until I'm dead (and
I'm only 32). But for now the 15" LCD will have to do. I have a 19" KDS
Trinitron monitor as well, but unless this thing will be stationary, I hate
to have to lug a 19" monitor around.
Thanks!
