[SOLVED] project- Connecting the Dell Ubuntu Laptop to TV with HDMI

Ok not sure if it's the right sub forum but no ubuntu/linux section.
I bought an HDMI cable ,plugged it in back of a Sharp LCD tv and in the laptop connection. So in the tv in the right mode I see only the laptop's desktop, even if I'm actually playing a video in the laptop. Means, it won't show the current picture that the laptop is previewing , but will stuck on the desktop's picture. Checked the tv book, and googled the problem. I followed the folks telling there to write some 'xrander ' and 'xrander bla bla bla'. Everytime I type this in the terminal, laptop tells that it don't recognize another screen.
What shell I do?

Go to System -> Preferences -> Display and select mirror displays if you want both of them to display the same.

For future reference, there is a Linux forum, which used to be clearly labelled as such, but for some reason known only to the powers that be they decided to rename it to the inaccurate, and misleading, "Open Source Software".
