My Oldest son's computer met an untimely end while I was at work I guess he tried to swap the Keyboards and now it won't power on, it isn't worth fixing so its time to consult the wise ones on a new computer


What do you think of this one?

I'm guessing this will be a gaming computer, if so, I would add another ~$100 for an i5 2500k because it allows for more future proofing

I think that build is fine, and the greater performance gains will be seen with a better GPU than the 2500k.

Look at the GTX 560 or AMD HD 6870 and possibly look at DDR3 1600 and play around for something to match the budget.

No to the Coolermaster PSU! It's barely a notch above junk. A quality modern PSU has full range active PFC (no little voltage switch) and some level of 80+ certification for efficiency. Seasonic, Antec, Corsair, XFX, and Enermax/LEPA are among the better brands. A single GTX460 can run on a decent 450W-500W PSU (Tom's ran one on a 380W Antec Earthwatts). On a budget, the Antec "Earthwatts" or Corsair "Builder" are good units.

Yes it will be a gaming computer and "homework" when I can get him to do it 🙁
I was figuring the GTX 460 1g while old can be picked up for sub-130 on Newegg and as low as 99 on sale thought it might work but I'll fiddle around with the numbers and see if I can ekk out a 6950 2gb

To be honest I use toms benchmarks and this site http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU11/188 sure they are synthic benchmarks but it gives me a baseline for what kind of performence I will be getting and a single 460 gtx 1g wasn't too shabby.
