Proliant DL380 G4 Supported CPU's

I recently acquired an HP Proliant DL380 G4 for free and I'm looking to upgrade the CPU's. From what I could find I am currently running on the highest level single core CPU that it supports.

The Hp site only lists one dual core CPU as being supported. Would it be beneficial for me to get the dual core CPU that it says it supports?

Also since there are more dual core socket 604 CPU's available would the board support a non-listed one like this one?

"NOTE: This kit is not backwards compatible, existing systems cannot be upgraded." probably implies that you can't upgrade your DL380 G4. That kit was only available with the ProLiant DL380 G4 SAS.

A non-listed processor might work, but it will most likely run at it's lowest speed. You should contact Hp to verify what processor upgrade is available for your system, if any.

I know that it can be upgraded because I pulled the 3.2 GHz CPU's that were in it for the 3.6's I ordered before I new it supported dual core. It's also the SCSI model.

I am reluctant to contact hp as I imagine they will only be willing to tell me to use "chip & heatsync" combos they offer.

As long as they confirm that dual-core processors are now supported on your specific model number, you can buy them anywhere else. Did you flash the BIOS to the latest version?

Yes, I have the latest BIOS version. I'm just wanting to make sure that it would support 8x the cache and that there are no other weird reasons that it wouldn't work.

If the processors are officially supported on your motherboard, then they'll work.

I just bought them and I'll see what happens.

I was unable to find a support list or else I would have checked against it. The closest thing I was have been able to find is the list of CPU's they would ship with.

I suppose was asking if anyone here knows whether or the board will support the 16MB L3 cache. The iLO has L3 listed but since my current chips don't have L3 it is blank.

The only info I could find is an Oracle Database power point that lists a DL380 G4 with 1MB cache.

I'll report back with my trial and error.

The SL9HA is physically larger and takes some work to get in the socket but it does NOT work in the DL380 G4. Now I have some of those to kick around... Oh well live and learn.

That brings me back to one of my original questions, would it be worth the money (~$30) to go from the 3.6ghz single core to the 2.8 ghz dual core? Or more importantly what are the benefits of switching? I don't know if the drop in speed is worth the doubling of cores.

It all depends on what you'll use the server for. Will it be busy enough to justify the CPU upgrade?

I'm going to use it to run a Minecraft server, lamp, terraria server, ect. As time goes on I intend on adding some other low performance cost game servers like doom. In short I will be running many applications on it at all times.

I don't really view the price as problem for it, but If it won't benefit me I don't want to waste the money.

I'd run it as is and upgrade only if the processors are too busy. If they rarely peak at 100% and average less than 60%, upgrading to dual core won't help.

Ok then, so it would be a step up. I'm looking to just get the computer done forever all at once rather than add to it little by little.

On page 9 of this document:

[Under processors]
"2.83-GHz Intel® Xeon™ dual core, 1066-MHz FSB, 4-MB cache (for use with dual core processor SCSI system
board assembly number 012863-001 only)"

[under system boards]
"a) System board, single-core processor support, with processor cages and system battery - replacement part no.:399133-001."

"b) System board, dual-core processor support, SCSI, with processor cages and system battery (for use with Intel® Xeon™ dual-core processor only) - replacement part no.: 404715-001 or 411028-001"


To install dual core processors you would need a dl380g4 system board assembly number 012863-001 that has a replacement part number 404715-001 or 411028-001.

On my system l find the board assembly number and replacement part number at the edge of the system board under the pci raid controller.

If the numbers match you should be able to upgrade to dual core processors, but I can't guarantee it as service manuals can not always be trusted.



In 2005, HP carried out dl380 gl benchmark testing on how many sales orders could be processed in one hour, and the 2.8 dual core model scored 32% higher than the single core 3.6 processor model.

Thank you for that pdf, That was what I was wanting to know! I have been running the hyper threaded 3.6Ghz for about 10 months now and they have worked out. I get some kernel panics in Ubuntu 12.04 every now and then that I think are performance related so I may step up to the dual cores now that I know it would be a step up.
