I would like to use my old Westell 327W as a wifi access point. My new Netgear 7550 dsl modem/router is numbered 192.168.254.254. My Westell is numbered 192.168.1.1. What number should I change the Westell to? Thanks

It will work that way if you use a mask of 255.255.0.0.

Now if you are going to use a more convention subnet mask you need to put the westell in 192.168.254.x As long as it does not duplicate the netgear router it does not matter. The IP you chose for the netgear will work fine but most people use the lowest address....now there are some that use the highest like you did but it is uncommon.

Thanks for the reply. Both router addresses are the default numbers they came with. The Netgear ending in .254 was so far away numerically from the Westell at .1 that I was wanting to avoid surprises. My hope is to run from my Netgear 7550 modem/router through Actiontec Ethernet over power line adapters to my Westell as a wifi access point. Wifi just doesn't reach my deck 150 ft in one direction, and my garage shop 40 ft in another direction.

Thanks, Bill. I have a lot to learn about things like subnet mask and DHCP pool, what these addresses are used for and how they interact. If you have a link to a tutorial for this type of discussion I'd appreciate getting a heads up.
