Pros and cons of folding

So i'm thinking that I want to start using my PC for folding just so I could maybe help out a bit but I want to know what the biggest downsides are? Will it slow down my connection (internet where i'm from is already one of the slowest in the world), will it hold back my PC from performing well when I play demanding games or does it only use spare CPU and GPU power?

Any idea how to get the maximum capacity out of my i5 4460 and GTX 970? Currently folding with the default settings.
