im looking at setting up a proxy server (on my current server) but im wondering if the benifits are great so ill ask here:

proxy caching - does it actually speed up?

internet bandwidth management - can you stop one machine hogging the bandwidth?

can a proxy server limit virus's and so on through a network?

and what are some good proxy servers (software)?

I just started playing around with this a few days ago.

are you saying that you want to set up a server for other people to use?

can a proxy server limit virus's and so on through a network?
yes it's like adding a router/firewall.

and what are some good proxy servers (software)?

If you're asking about software so you can hide your IP behind a proxy then it would depend on the browser you're using. Also it would depend upon if you wanted to automatically switch from one server to another to bounce your masked IP address all over the world.

There is software for free that will strip and filter working proxy servers. I downloaded Charon. And since I use the fire fox browser I downloaded an extension called switch proxy . Or if you just want to use one proxy server you can set it up in connections for whatever browser you're using.
