PS3 HDMI Output, Displayport incompatability?

Greetings,

I have brought a ps3 and i'm trying to get a post on my monitor. I have a dell ultrasharp 24 and as you might know it lacks a HDMI in favour of a DP. I'm using a HDMI to DP (Male-Male) cable from the ps3 hdmi output to my monitor's DP input. I am not getting anything on screen and it isn't detecting a signal. Any ideas as to why?

I have tried it using a standard HDMI on a friend's monitor and it worked fine. The rgb output also doesn't post when I put them on my old tv which also worries me, but I believe this to be attributed to the input selection on the ps3's software CP

Solution
The simplest solution in my opinion is HDMi to HDMi and HDMI to DVI adapter for PS3 to monitor and DP to DP for graphics card to monitor or DVI to DVI and switching when using one or the other.
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know those existed :)

The issue I have is that I want both signals available without messing about with wires.

I'm just looking for the cheapest solution. Here's my available in/outs:

HD 7850 GPU: HDMI OUT, DP OUT, 2 x DVI OUT

PS3: HDMI OUT

Monitor: DP IN, DVI IN, VGA IN (Obsolete)

1) I could buy a DVI switchbox and get a HDMI-DVI cable from my PS3 and use the existing DVI from my PC = Approx. £15
2) I could use a DP to DP cable from my GPU to my monitor and use a HDMI to DVI cable for my PS3 = Approx. £15

Any others?

Can I use a HDMI cable with a DP to HDMI adapter or will this create the same issue as the cable did?
