PS3, Monitor, and Scaling

So I'm looking to get a 27' monitor to play my PS3 (and eventually PS4) in my dorm room. I have a quality headset that connects through the consoles Optical port, so audio is not an issue, however I do have one major concern. My past experiences running PC games at sub-native resolution with my 8-year old HP Monitor yielded only blurry-washed out images. Yet, I have seen forum users who claim that their monitors yield better gaming experiences than their HDTVs. My question is. How well do 720p PS3 games scale with modern displays?
I would be in the market to purchase something along the lines of this ViewSonic. Though I am open to suggestions for any other brand/product. I'm particularly curious about Samsung as they advertise their monitors to have a "Magic Upscale" feature.
