PS3 not playing PS2 games

I bought a 4 port PS3 20gb model for my sons birthday but when he tried to play PS2 games, the wireless controller (3rd party but brand new) disconnects and a message comes up only offering to format the ps2 disc ! How can I get around this ?

Well bluray and DVD are on different lasers so it might be a hardware issue,try to play a dvd video if it fails to play those as well you have a faulty dvd laser.
Or if you have a PS2 game that is on a normal CD disk try that,there are only a few as far as I know.
