i'm pretty sure this is the right place for a topic like this

so basically i want to send the video signal through my desktop, which i then play through something similar to a media player or something like that. i want to run it from an HDMI slot, but if i can only do component that would be fine aswell.
i'm pretty sure this is the function of TV tuner cards, but since i have no experience with them i don't exactly know how they work. any advice would be awesome.

again, the goal that i have set is to have my ps3 run its video through my pc, so that i can go in and out of full screen on the ps3, and be able to use the pc in the background of the image. so i would want the video to play similar to how a media player would play a movie, except instead of a movie it's a ps3 game.

Solution
HDMI is not possible without heavy input lap as the signal gets compressed to hard-drive via MP4 or similar encoding. And you wouldn't be able to do much of anything in the background.

Component is very similar but not as bandwidth or resource intensive, but still laggy.

Better, AND Cheaper, to just get a second monitor with HDMI + DVI input and switching.

so do they allow for HD support? also does the picture come in without a delay? because obviously, a delay in the video is an obvious problem, and i don't mean a delay of something like 2 miliseconds, i mean a delay like, a second.

also, what type of program is used to display the video coming through? is it something that they give you or is it something you play through VLC or something?
sorry for all the questions, i just want to know exactly what i would be getting if i purchased a card like that

My tuner came with a media playback program to watch tv. There was an option to switch to the other input. mine does not have hdmi and I have not tried anything in hd through the inputs, but it has no delay except the delay of the lcd (which is there regardless and is only 5ms or so depending on your model)

i see what you're saying, but i really don't have any plans on recording the images, i just want to be able to stream it. component or hdmi would be fine and i can do it through pci, pci-e, or even pci 2.0 x16. i have a really good computer so i'm fully confident that it can do pretty much anything that i throw at it.
if it's too much of a hassel i guess i'll just have to send my ps3 input to the screen through another port, but it would be really nice if i could avoid that.

I understand what you were saying, but understand what I'm saying, THERE WILL BE LAG, the HDMI capture card is 'live' but it has enssentially what you would consider to be worse than mouse lag like we talked about above; 1/2 second doesn't matter for editing, but it does matter for gaming, and I've used a Black Magic card and I've experienced between a fraction of a second and just over a second lag on a high end editing PC (it's not the PCIe interface that's the issue here). I'd say recording would be easier than playing IMO.

Here's the card I'm talking about, it doesn't have encoding if you so like, but it then does consume alot of resources while monitoring, so task switching requires you to have a very good PC.

thanks a lot for your help, i guess i'll just have to put up with having my ps3 go to another port on my television, which isn't such a bad thing but i really would have prefered it to go through the desktop. this is just something i'll have to come back to at a later date or something.

again, thanks so much for helping me with this, i've never had any experience things like this.
