8-core x86 CPU (built by AMD)
PC GPU, delivering almost 2 TFLOPS of performance.
Unified 8GB of GDDR5 memory for use by both the CPU and GPU with 176GB/s of memory bandwidth
Large local hard drive

"We don't know specifics of the GPU, but with approaching 2 TFLOPS we're looking at a level of performance somewhere between a Radeon HD 7850 and 7870. The highest end PC GPUs are already faster than this, but the PS4's GPU is a lot faster than the PS3's RSX which was derived from NVIDIA's G70 architecture (used in the GeForce 7800 GTX, for example). "

The design of the Radeon 7900M series has its roots to the Pitcairn chip as found, for example, on the desktop Radeon HD 7870. The 7970M in particular is similar to its desktop 7870 counterpart with 1280 1D shader cores and 80 texture units, but has a core clock of only 850 MHz versus the 1000 MHz of the HD 7870. As a result, general performance of the HD 7970M is expected to lie somewhere between the 7850 and 7870 desktop Radeon cards.

The TDP is 100W again confirming its not power hungry making it console friendly

It would be exciting, but by the time the PS4 actually makes it to market, it will be using a mid-tier last-gen video card. Bfd.

We can only pray software companies will continue to produce PC games and not force us into last-gen mid-tier graphics on a console for a decade at a time.

Um if it's the equivalent of the 7870, then that means it's like a gtx 580 or close to like a 660ti, which is a pretty damn good card if you ask me. Considering the fact that the 660ti can play games like Crysis 3 with a mix of high very high settings I think it's safe to say that the graphics of the new consoles will be pretty phenomenal.

Also you have to factor in that the ps4 is build specifically for gaming and the graphics on it will naturally get better overtime as developers find ways to get the most out of the hardware. The graphics of the ps4 will one day surpass those of even Crysis 3 on ultra, so I'd say that's pretty damn good for consoles. The card in the ps4 is better than my current one and there are technically only 3 cards that are better than in it (I guess 4 now with Titan) at this current point.

The Ps4's graphics will be mind blowing, about the same as you will see in high end systems today. Granted, by the time it comes out PC technology will be that much farther ahead, but if it came out tomorrow it would compete with all but the most high end rigs.

Oh and It has 8gb of ram, that is used for both the graphics and processing, and we all know the OS isn't going to use very much so let's call that a cool 6 gb of vram? At the very minimum 4gb. So yeah, ultra high res textures, 1080p crysis 3 ultra settings all on a giant flatscreen with the added benefit of playing side by side with friends. I'm going to be buying one, only problem is they will probably be very hard to come by.

Oh, I thought the post said 7870, or equivalent? So it's like a gtx 570 then or something around there? Are Tflops the be all end all? Wat about shader, cores and all that nonsense?

Yeah just looked at AMD's site, so it's about the equivalent of the GTX 560 that I got a year ago for my PC. It produces great graphics all the same, I can run crysis 3 on high and it lookds great. Consoles are always better optimized and they will squeeze every drop of performance out of it so eventually it may approach a 580 in terms of graphical prowess. Is that a poor assumption?

TFLOPS are not the be all end all. They can be rather misleading, especially when comparing across different architectures. Nevertheless, the GPU appears to be a cut-down and heavily underclocked version of the 7870. So on a pure hardware performance level, it would be weaker than a 7850.

But you're absolutely right, they'll be able to squeeze more actual performance out of it than you ever could on the PC.

Yeah so it's more like the 560ti, or maybe slightly better out of the box. (It's a lot easier for me to think in nvidia terms) Which can potentially be pushed to the graphical fidelity of the 570 or maybe even the 660ti late in the console cycle. Graphics definitely improved every year in the last console generation, one- two years after release they make big leaps then just minor improvements.Still it's a card capable of performing tesselation in 1080p and running a game like Crysis on high, which still is really really good graphics. Even in a years time, it comes out in the fall btw, I don't think we will see a game that looks much better than Crysis 3.

"and we all know the OS isn't going to use very much"

Do we? Who said? From what I understand the console has a lot more going on in the background than previous consoles, so what your saying is pure speculation.

Sony are planning ahead with headroom for future games, every console before it has hit major problems with too little RAM.
Also PC's can page VRAM in and out of system RAM, bring up info on a running card it will show available graphics ram 2 - 4 times actual VRAM so it's kind of a moot point.

At this point it's pretty much ALL speculation.

I don't expect leaps and bounds in GPU tech in the next year enough to make me think this is going to be a bad purchase. I think with the OS and hardware being made for each other, the performance and visual aspects of this system will perform profoundly in comparison to the PS3. As TV's are still limited to 1080P, we also aren't asking my PS4 to push the 2560x1440 my PC has to to meet my requirements.

I'm looking forward to playing Crysis 3 level visuals on the couch. Maybe this will finally get me away from spending an easy $1k a year on trying to keep my gaming rig "up to date".

As a hardcore PC gamer, I have a feeling there will be a new awe with the PS4 seeing some very striking graphics on a 50...60....70" TV. Something you just can't get from a 24..27..30" PC monitor.

Now if for once I can plug in my Razer Nostromo and Black Mamba mouse to the PS4...though unlikely....I'd be in fragtastic heaven.

As with the last generation of consoles, I will own each console at one point once they're out. I hope they'll have an option for wireless keyboard and mouse controls in games.

Here's how it will all go down for me (I know how I am!)...I'll get each of the consoles. I'll keep the console I like most, sell the others and after a year or three when the graphics stagnate on the console and the games have all become lame sequels, my good ole' upgradeable PC will be the mainstay for gaming while the console fills the primary purpose of a media/streaming device on the main TV set.

Let's just hope the MS console has a better launch than the last one did, eh? I returned three the same day a month after launch. All of which threw errors, froze, or red ringed. Then I gave up on it and just before the PS3 was released, I got a 360 which failed after a month and had to be sent to McAllen, TX to be repaired. I received it a week later and it worked for three more years then failed. While the 360 was working during that three-year period, I bought a PS3. After two months I couldn't stand how loud that thing was (I had the one backward compatible with the PS2 mind you), the PSN was absolutely lame in comparison to Xbox Live and blu-ray wasn't even enough for me to want to keep the PS3 around. That PS3 was as loud as any PC I've ever owned even when just playing a blu-ray. Also, within that time, I bought a Wii and that was novel for about a month, fortunately that was in high demand and I sold it for the more than I bought it.

I bought a replacement for the 360 that lasted three years (after the one failed) and it's worked ever since. Kinect is awesome. I seldom game on the thing though. For the most part, my TV's built-in streaming services could fulfill my needs, but I like the voice activation/navigation the Kinect offers.

But I digress...

I basically didn't bother reading any of the posts....

If I remember correctly, the GPU in the PS4 is estimated to have 1.86 teraflops of computational power. The closes match is the Radeon HD 7850 which has 1.76 teraflops of computational power. The Radeon HD 7850 is more or less an "entry level high end card".

The good thing about all upcoming PS4s is that they all use the same exact graphics card. That means game developers do not need to worry about using codes that works well enough with nVidia and AMD graphic cards. They also do not even have to bother worrying about older or newer generation cards that may need to have different coding to optimize performance. Generally, when writing code to optimize performance for a specific card, then all other cards can potentially suffer from lower performance.

With a single GPU, coding games is much easier and more optimized. As developers becomes more familiar with the GPU, then in time future games can either perform better, look better or both.

As is the case with any console, eventually they will be considered to have obsolete hardware because their hardware is static while new hardware for PCs rolls out about ever 9 months - 12 months.

i don't think it reach GTX 580 performance i'm thinking its going be at GTX 560 6870. or roughly Performance maybe little less , if it does reach GTX 580 then i'm nerd rage and have upgrade 🙁 HD7850 is 30% slower then GTX580 HD6870 vs The GTX 580 its roughly 50% more powerfull, then HD6870

The GPU only need to be compliant to whatever code the game engine runs on.
Developers only have to be familiar with the Tool sets developed for whatever engine is developed to run the content .
I'm not crazy about throwing all that corporate money at such a narrow way of thinking .
It has the potential to stagnate creativity because you're forced to stay within it's capabilities .
which as of now are only slightly higher than mid level performance.
Ultimately it's becoming clear that consoles as a concept is failing.
It's a very nice shinny box with a turd inside .

I know this is blasphemous to PC gamers, but for the majority of my single player games, I switch to my 42 inch HDTV and use my XBOX 360 controller. I think it looks better number one, and number two I think it's more comfortable to play on the bed with a simple controller in hand. I still game on BF3 on the monitor cuz I have to be competitive, and other games that don't have controller support. The controller couch set up is better, I'm sorry. Consoles are ALWAYS worth having for the sheer fact of when you have friends over NOBODY wants to hang out and take turns playing PC games with a mouse/keyboard.

You can play on the couch or bed with a controller on the PC too. The difference is the PC leaves all the options open, a console doesn't. This goes for lots of other aspects too, simply because the console is defined by one company, and is locked to their vision. This has benefits as well as drawbacks.

Duhh I was referring to the PC aint nobody got time for console graphics!!

Yeah It was a little misleading. I play most of my PC single player games via a mini HDMI cable on my HDTV using a xbox 360 controller for windows. My last sentence I feel is true as well, consoles are much better when you want to locally play a game with friends. Consoles also have the advantage of being relatively hacker free in multiplayer, but FPS are always better on the PC in my opinion.
