Recently my friend gave me his old graphics card. A Vtx r9 280x. The card has a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector and he told me that it only needed the 6 pin so I plugged it in but the card won't spin or display on my monitor. I don't know whether my psu unit or motherboard is stopping the card from working. My current specs are:
-gigabyte m68mt-s2
-4gb ddr3 RAM
-AMD Phenom II X4 850 Quad-Core processor
- PSU : Rohs ATX-500 500W power Supply
my power supply only had the 1 6 pin connector and no 8 pin. I'm not sure in my psu is incompatible or if i need an 8 pin adaptor or something

any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'd say you need a new PSU with the necessary connectors and a higher power output as your machine will have a TDP of around 490w. Something such as an EVGA 750w SuperNOVA G2 should easily power your system and leave you plenty of room to breathe for any future upgrades. Alternatively the Corsair CX650M is a cheaper alternative.
