After taking my computer outside and cleaning it out with a compressed air can I took it back inside and turned it on. When I pressed the on switch it instantly made a fairly loud bang or pop sound and smelt like burning although I did not see any smoke. When cleaning I used only short bursts and kept the can upright at all times so I don't think at least any liquid came out. I unplugged it and the smell was coming from the psu which it was makes me suspect it. The dust build up was fairly a lot due to 3 years of no cleaning.

I am now really worried to start it as I don't know if this can cause further damage.

A power supply is not too expensive so I could replace it however I am worried about the other parts. How likely are they to be fried? Does the power supply have any protection against frying other components? If I buy another power supply might that be fried too? Is it safe to try and turn it on again with this power supply? How can I test the other components? What could have caused this?

System spec:
OCZ ModXStream Pro Series Power Supply PC 600W
Intel 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K CPU
Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 Motherboard
Asus GeForce GTX660 TI-DC2-2GD5 Nvidia Graphics Card
G.Skill 16GB (2x 8GB) Dual Channel Ares Series Memory Kit

Thanks

Solution
replace dont continue !!.
you dont want to ruin your rig.

cheap but super safe solution: xfx ts 550w.
or expensive but ultra safe: evga supernovas gs g2
A Capacitor blew on the PSU. I doubt the compressed air had anything to do with it unless something got pushed around and shorted something out. Like a metal fibre or washer or something that fell inside the PSU. It could be a screw that was rattling loose inside the PSU.

I'll second the EVGA G2. Nice unit.
