i got a new case for my computer.
motherboard: MSI H97 PC MATE LGA 1150 Intel H97 Chipset ATX
cpu: i5 4590
graphics: msi gtx 960 2gb
ram: 2x8 gb vengeance 1600 ddr3
cpu fan: stock cpu cooler
and a 650w power supply. all was fine and working

then i switched cases to a DIYPC Gamemax-W White
i also switched power supplies to a xt 500w (i dont have exact brands on both power supplies as i have to use my computer at work to submit this, on demand i can get exact make). after putting everything in i could not get it to display. so i went through a 22 step process that i found on this site and it seems that the motherboard was dead. so i ordered a new one but due to money constraints went with an micro board

new motherboard: MSI Intel H81 LGA 1150 DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard (H81M-E33)
received it put it in and triple check all cables are plugged in correctly, turn on computer. a few seconds go by, i hear a loud pop and saw a bright flash coming from psu.

im gonna buy a new psu as the one i have isnt evga or corsair(its pretty cheap) but my question is, when i buy the new psu what do i do to make sure this doesnt happen again?

when switching the cases and when i put the new motherboard in i made sure i had my anti-static wrist band on the whole, there was no cables running behind the motherboard, no extra standoff screws, cpu cooler was secure, no extra thermal paste. ive been absolutly baffled by this and i dont have the money to keep buying psu's and watching them blow up. and help would be appreciated

well i switched PSU's and it started working. just kind of prayed and hope i didnt blow up another. didnt blow up. think im good here. components dont seem damaged
