PSU blowing up during game play.

Recently i decided to get back in to gaming again, Over the last weak i managed to destroy 3 psu.
During game play they start to crackle then a bang.
The last 2 times has been with a new 550W PSU nitrox sl 550.

My spec is amd fx-8150 overclock 5%
amd sapphire r9 270x first time was oveclocked to 1150 second 2 times no overclock
asus m5a78l-m/usb3 mother board.

This has only happened under gaming i can leave the pc on for hours during normal use.

It looks like you've been buying PSU-shaped objects, that are unfit for purpose. Get something like a 500W Antec Earthwatts, or 450W Rosewill Capstone or XFX, and you'll be fine.

Would this cause a complete fail as opposed to just causing the system to shut down or reboot ?

Oh yes. Such ..."devices" tend to not be good for half their labels, and lack protection circuits so they can die violently when overloaded. So far, you may have been lucky, as they often do not like to die alone, and take attached parts with them into the fiery abyss.
