I am not able to get a new PSU for a little while, and was wondering what the usual way these things go and how much I might need to spend depending on how many components I lose. The PSU is a hytec 850w (terrible I know)

yup test it with a new psu and see if it works. we have no way of guessing either what may or may not have been damaged.

can recommend when you get the new one to not cheap out. a quality psu will not only last longer, but will have a lot of protection built in to prevent damage to parts if something does go wrong. had a pc recently i put a good psu in that shorted on the hdd and fried the wires all the way back to the psu in the surge!!! other than the hdd itself, the rest of the pc was fine since the protections kicked in and killed the power fast.

do yourself a huge favor and buy something quality. we can help with the choice if you need some guidance there.

$150 mobo
$450 cpu
$400 gpu
$200 in HDDs
$150 SSD
Then the PSU on top of that, I've heard it can take the entire system out with a bad PSU so I'm extremely worried

you can do some looking and see if there is any obvious damage to any other part. but that is only superficial and can miss some damage. got to power it up with another psu to know anything for sure.

start there and pray everything else is good to go.
