Before anyone says gpu coil whine, the PSU is 100% the source of the noise - I took it out the case and moved it as far away as possible from my rig.

Running 3dmark fire strike normal my gpu score fluctuates from 12000 to 18000 and during the test the psu screams and whines. The fan is working and i havent had random bsod. Because of this I returned a msi gtx 980 ti gaming thinking it was goosed.

My psu is a corsair cx750m which is only a year old... anyone heard of anything similar?

My PC:

Asus z87 pro
I7 4790k with H60
16Gb corsair vengeance 1600 MHz
Asus strix 980 ti
3 SSD & 1 hdd

Unfortunately the CX series is known for these kinds of issues and is a lower end model from Corsair. Its likely not giving the GPU enough power. Get yourself something like the EVGA 750 B2 to replace it, or a Corsair RM series if you prefer them (but the EVGA is better). XFX TS 750 as well would be good.

Thanks rogue leader, I read through forums but most seemed to deal with PSUs that were totally dying which this isn't.

I wasn't 100% certain if my psu was inadequate but the general consensus is that cx=shit 😉

I bought a hx1000i which I hope is decent.

Yeah the HX is tier 1 so thats perfect also platinum rated so very very efficient. You probably weren't short on wattage 750 would have been fine, but no problem there, this is a high quality PSU and if you decide to get crazy and add a second 980ti some day you're covered.
